To mix up the types of gameplay, the game's perspective will switch into 2-D mode (more like 2-D side scrolling with 3-D elements). Next, Sega introduced the return of precision platform levels that slow down Sonic's normal pace but add to the challenge as he attempts to leap across platforms while avoiding spikes.ĭuring the course of play, "quick time events" occur during jumps and the speed of the player's response determines whether Sonic heads to more rewarding parts of the track. Even while the dragon floats in space, from the players' point of view, it might as well be a rollercoaster. In the next level, inspired by Chinese architecture and myth, Sonic begins his race on top of the Great Wall and then gets up on the back of a long snake-like red dragon. Players can still miss grabbing rings, but the overall look is what 3-D Sonic should have been all along. While choosing the villa seemed, at first, like a way to show off a developer's favorite vacation spot, the hilly track was thinner than other 3-D Sonic efforts and the action moves at a quick pace. In our demo, Sonic started the ring race in a seaside villa that was inspired by Grecian city of Mykonos. Sonic's midlife 3-D crisis might soon be over thanks to a return to basics approach in Unleashed. If anything it makes me confident that even if this isn't "FOMGZ SONIC AM BAEK" good, the next games if they continue down this path and engine will be getting there much faster. Include the surrealism of design found in the past games, and cut off the "fat" that was gimmcky gameplay & unnessesary character additions and you'd just could have another Genesis era of games.Īs it stands Unleashed is looking to be a great step in the right direction after so many bad mistakes.

Now what would be the remedy for all of this? Simple, just design an engine free of glitch limitations (seems to be the Hedgehog Engine so far) and then, rather than insert the "go really fast" routine of current Sonic games (Rush), take a step back and remember than it was the buildup of momentum to get fast coupled with precise twitch based platforming that defines Sonic and make levels that support this. Sonic 06 - just one big clusterfuck of bugginess thanks to being incomplete at launch Shadow - Not so much guns in Sonic game as unusuable ranged weapons thanks to shoddy programming, camera bugs, etc. Heroes - Gimmicky implimentation of a three person teams and half assed physics which ruined the overall flow of things It's just that every game afterward added an unnecessary "catch" of sorts that would only serve to bring down the games in general:Īdventure 2 - Too many characters and not enough gameplay balance between them It incorporated the old style of Sonic Games (momentum based platforming, multiple routes for exploration/speed, and segmented levels) while introducing some new things as well ("deeper" gameplay styles for the other characters, replayablility in the form of collecting emblems and to a lesser extent raising Chao). The Adventure 1 Engine was the perfect example of this. There was never any question in my mind as to whether or not Sonic could work in 3D. I think it would work well as a compromise. And no, you don't get to quote "the more the merrier."), maybe showing tiny interstitial cinemas that connect levels Sonic 3-style? Only a few seconds long, just showing a hint of "He grabbed onto a rocket and rode it there" or "He spun past the wall and dropped down to it" and so forth.Īn option for an arcadey experience, and an option for an adventure. But why not offer the choice of a classical run-through that pretty much skips straight from level to level, cutting down the vocals to the bare necessities (Sonic doesn't need to comment on how "cool" something is as he passes by it, but vocal cues are important for some bosses. Some people want that, and it could be there. Imagine having the choice whether or not you wanted to run around and explore the city, see the plot-based cinemas, hear the characters chatter away.

That's something Sonic games could easily offer: an option for a streamlined level-to-level experience. I enjoyed it, but it's good that the option was there. It didn't hurt that those who hated the story could entirely skip the storybook area once they learned about it.
